Motorists are being warned about using mobile phones whilst driving.

Dorset Police have issued the warning to road users that using a hand held phone whilst behind the wheel of a vehicle is illegal and can result in penalty points being added to their licence and a fine.

The force has also issued a series of circumstances of using a mobile device whilst driving that are illegal.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "Motorists caught using a mobile phone while driving could receive six penalty points and a £200 fine.

"The law still applies if you are: stopped at traffic lights,  queuing in traffic, supervising a learner driver, driving a car with stop/start technology that switches the engine off when you come to a stop, holding and using a device that’s offline or in ‘flight mode’.

"New drivers, who have passed their test within the last 24 months, also risk having their licence revoked if they accrue six or more penalty points within that period.
