Police are investigating two separate vehicle fires which took place during the early hours.

A moped was found to be on fire in the area of Parkmead Road in Wyke Regis and just hours later a car was also found alight on the approach road to Upwey Railway station.

The incident at Upwey involving the car is currently being treated by police as suspected arson and at present there is no information to suggest that the two incidents are linked.

Officers and firefighters from Weymouth Fire Station were called out 1.56am to a car fire in Upwey.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus were able to put out the fire using two hose reel jets.

The stop message meaning that no further action was required, came in at 2.29am.

The car has since been moved from the location.

Later, at 4.41am firefighters were called to Parkmead Road in Wyke, where a moped was found to be alight in a residential garden.

The homeowner said: “The bike was stolen and dumped on my property, I was woken up to a bright light coming through my bedroom window – I thought my house was on fire.

“There was also a big cloud of smoke from the petrol.”

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze upon arrival and police were notified.

The stop, meaning that no further action was required, came in at 4.56am.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police: “At 2am on Wednesday, April 24, Dorset Police received a report of a car on fire at Upwey Railway Station in Weymouth. Officers attended the incident with the fire service.

“Then at 4.38am, we received a further report of a moped on fire in Parkmead Road in Weymouth. Officers were not required to attend, and the fire service dealt with the incident.

“Enquiries are underway into both incidents and there is no information on the log at this time about whether or not they are being treated as linked.”

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call at 1.56am this morning about a vehicle fire on Upwey Railway Station Approach Road. A crew from Weymouth attended the incident and two breathing apparatus wearers used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. Our stop was in at 2.29am and the police attended.

“We received another call at 4.41am this morning about a moped fire on Parkmead Road, Weymouth. A crew from Weymouth attended the incident and used a hose reel jet to extinguish. Our stop was in at 4.56am. The police were notified.”
